Implementing a comprehensive ninth grade transition program that is effective and achieves its purpose isn't easy – and if someone tries to tell you it is, they're crazy! The implementation of Freshman Focus requires a commitment from your administration, your teachers, and your students that ninth graders are going to start being treated differently in your school. And it all begins at The Freshman Focus Training Institute – an intense, two-day program designed to train and prepare participants for effective implementation.
The program uses a "train-the-trainer" model so that participants leave the Training Institute with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to return to their school to lead Freshman Focus implementation, train teacher mentors, and train student leaders.
Schools should send up to four (4) participants to the Training Institute and are strongly encouraged to do so. There will be opportunities to team process and begin building a framework for Freshman Focus in your school.
There are four major components to implementing the Freshman Focus program in your school: (1) Understanding and preparing for the logistics of managing the program and using the curriculum; (2) Developing and implementing an effective ninth grade orientation camp; (3) Training teacher mentors and equipping them with tools for success; and (4) Preparing student leaders for their very important role in the Freshman Focus classroom.
